Potential Higher Energy Efficiency for Japan Steel Industry

Advisory Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, which is consultant panel of minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, released environmental action to meet the energy outlook. The committee expects Japanese steel industry can reduce carbon dioxide emission by 5 million tonnes by introducing new technology for around 1 trillion yen of capital expenditure.

The committee expects Japanese greenhouse gasses emission will decrease to 1.157 billion tonnes in 2020, which is 15% lower than 2005 and 8% lower than 1990.

The committee recommends the steel industry should introduce state of the art energy saving technology when the steel makers renew the facilities. The committee suggests higher performance power generation system, blast furnace top pressure recovery turbine and high performance coke oven system contributes the lower CO2 emission.

The committee also emphasized Japanese efficient steel making technology should prevail for the world industry. The committee indicates the hurdle for the new technology is additional space for environmental friendly facilities, matching with existing facilities, renewal timing and limited supply for the technology and facilities. 1.Advisory Committee on Energy and Natural Resources
