Japan Steel, Major Industries Opposes Unequal CO2 Obligation

Japan Iron and Steel Federation and 8 industry organizations announced on Wednesday they oppose Kyoto Protocol extension and the new framework for outsiders of the Protocol. The organizations oppose the chairman’s proposal draft of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long Term Cooperative Action at ongoing 15th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change or COP15.

Mr. Takeshi Miyamoto, the managing director of JISF, argued at press conference on Wednesday the draft is ineffective for CO2 reduction in the world and asked Japanese government to build fair framework. Mr. Yuzo Ichikawa, the executive director of JISF pointed out the proposal is nothing to do with the principle of the framework when China’s voluntary commitment would result in 90% more CO2 emission by 2020.

JISF and organizations asked Japanese government to keep words of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, who said reduction target would assume the agreement of all major countries.
