Hyundai Steel Starts Steel Sheet for Outer Panel of Automobile

Hyundai Steel is expected to start commission of steel sheet for automobile outer panel in the second half of 2011, according to Mr. Woo, Yoo Cheol, President & CEO. The firm supplies steel sheet for inner panel, which develops steel sheet for outer panel, and gets the ball rolling of C hot rolling mill for automobile which started the operation in September. The firm acquires approval of Hyundai Motor and supplies steel sheet for outer panel using roof of small car. Hyundai Steel enhances research & development center in Danjin iron works, and develops the steel sheet with Hyundai Motor.

Hyundai Hysco, cold rolled steel sheet maker of Hyundai group, consumes hot rolled coil at 4.5 million tones per year. Hyundai Steel is supplying hot rolled coil at 2 million tones to Hyundai Hysco, which is supplying it of 1.2 million tones for automobile. Hyundai Steel plans to increase the supply of steel sheet for automobile by commissioning of C hot rolling mill in 2011.

Hyundai Steel builds up R&D center with the investment of 85 billion won in 2011, which increases staff and research machine, and enhances development system of high grade steel products including plate for shipbuilding.

Mr. Woo thinks to catch up with POSCO’ technology about steel sheet for automobile, which spur technological aptitude by co-development with Hyundai Motor.
