Japan Stainless Steel and Ferroalloy Makers Stop Operation by Mega Quake

Mega quake made impact on stainless steel makers and ferroalloy makers as well as processors and dealers in North Japan. They are trying hard to confirm safety of employees and check their productive equipments but there are no prospects for operative recommencement when electric power supply runs down and logistics was hit.

As for electric furnace steel makers, Sendai Works of JFE Bars & Shapes is confirming safety of employees working in the works, including group and partner companies. Tohoku Steel hasn’t confirmed safety of employees those who were at home as of quake emergence. Ishinomaki works of Ito Seitetsujo is also confirming employees’ safety while examining rebar production shift to Tsukuba works. Hachinohe works of Tokyo Tekko wasn’t impacted for productive equipments.

Nippon Steel & Sumikin Stainless Corporation stopped operation of Kashima works, checking productive equipments. Kawasaki works of Nippon Yakin Kogyo will resume operation as soon as electric power supply returns to stable while electric power supply recovered after 9-hour stoppage. Fukushima works of Nippon Kinzoku restarted operation in afternoon of Monday. Itabashi works of Nippon Kinzoku continues operation after Saturday with relatively small damage.

Hachinohe works of Pacific Metals stopped operation of productive equipments for ferronickel due to electric outage and flood. Chuo Denki Kogyo stopped production of manganese ferroalloy in Kashima works and aims to restart operation as soon as earlier after confirmation of electric power supply.

Special steel dealer, Tekkosya’s sales base in Miyagi Prefecture was took sea. It is unclear when the site can restart operation. Stainless steel dealer, Shinko Kinzoku’s sales has also not decided when to recommence operation. Major coil center, Fujita Kinzoku’s North Japan site stopped operation by flood.

Nippon Steel Logistics, Nippon Steel Group’s distribution company, is preparing truckloads for emergent orders.
