Mix Scrap Ship Demurrage in Zhejiang by Radiation Inspection

Ship demurrage seems to be occurring in Taizhou and Ningbo ports of China, those which are China’s main ports to import mixed metal scrap from Japan. Chinese authorities have recently strengthened radiation dose inspection on Japanese metal scrap since there were some cases that Japanese cargo represented higher radiation dose than Chinese regulation in and after March. As a result, cargo discharges per day seem decreasing largely.

Taizhou and Ningbo ports in Zhejiang Province are the main quays to import Japanese mixed metal scrap which contains demolition waste and used electric appliances. Japanese major scrap exporter indicated approximately 40 ships are under demurrage at Taizhou and Ningbo.

Japan China Commodities Inspection Company (JCIC), Tokyo headed company to inspect scrap shipped for China, explained China’s authorities presently implement severer radiation dose inspection on Japanese mixed metal scrap by spreading scrap at 1-meter height though the previous inspection was on a pile.

As a result, only 3-4 bulkers can discharge mixed metal scrap at Taizhou and Ningbo per day compared with approximately 10 bulkers per day of normal situation, said Japanese scrap exporter source.
