Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation(JOGMEC) got exclusive rights to exploration for cobalt rich crust in international waters, 600 kilometers off of Minamitorishima, on 27th, in commission from Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. JOGMEC and the International Seabed Authority signed a contract at that day. It is the first contract for cobalt rich crust in the world. JOGMEC plans to start exploration in April.
