Malaysia Government Evades Move SG for Hot Rolled Coil

Malaysia government announced on Tuesday the government has completed the investigation of the Safeguards on hot rolled coil, decided to not move Safeguard. The government searched by appeals of Mega Steel and judged the increased in imports of hot rolled coil have not caused or threaten to cause serious injury to the domestic steel industry. Ministry of Economic, Trade and Industry, Japan and Japan Iron & Steel Federation has opposed for SG when SG makes impact to domestic manufacturing industry in Malaysia.

Mega Steel claimed that the imports of hot rolled coil into Malaysia have increased from 2007 to 2010, and have caused serious injury to t e domestic steel industry and appealed to government to increase import tax of hot rolled coil by 35%. .

The government started the investigation of SG from May 1, and there was an increase in imports by 35% during the period of injury determination from 1 January 2010 to 30 September 2010. However, the increased in imports have not caused injury to the domestic steel industry.

Domestic manufacturing industry has opposed SG. Japanese ministry and the federation explained SG makes impact to domestic manufacturing industry in open hearing in June. It was feared Japanese companies move to overseas from Malaysia. The government seems to consider the impact to domestic manufacturing industry.
