Nippon Steel and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced on Wednesday Mitsubishi Heavy Industries adopts high-tensile strength steel plate of Nippon Steel which the stress at yield is 47 kilogram class, tensile strength is 60 kilogram class jointly developed by both firm to large container vessel that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is building.Because container vessels are getting larger and larger, steel plates are getting thicker and thicker. However, the elasticity of the steel plate drops away if the steel plate gets thicker. Shipbuilders require the steel plate which has high-strength and elasticity for margin of safety. Nippon Steel used the thermo-mechanical control process, TMCP, which cut grain in a tissue, and established commercial production technology of high-tensile strength steel plate. Highest strength steel plate that is used to commercial vessel is the stress at yield of 40 kilogram, tensile strength of 50 kilogram class which is used 15 years ago until now. It is the first in the world that high-strength steel plate of 47 kilogram strength is adopted to commercial vessel.
